"It's true that we have great chances to win the World Cup," Coach Carlos Alberto Parreira said. "But that doesn't mean it's a done deal. We still need to play the matches and win them. And we know that's not going to be easy. All teams will be trying their best to beat the defending champions."
Brazil is as strong a favorite as ever. In addition to comfortably leading FIFA's world rankings since 2002, Brazil won the 2004 Copa America and last year's Confederations Cup. It also finished first in the South American World Cup qualifying group, ahead of rival Argentina.
The team will be led by two-time FIFA Player of the Year Ronaldinho, and he will be supported by all-stars including Kaka, Ronaldo, Adriano, Cafu, Robinho and Roberto Carlos.
"We have a very strong team, very technical and experienced," said Ronaldo, the hero of the 2002 title team.
Brazil's World Cup record is unmatched. It has reached the semifinals in 10 of the 17 World Cups since the competition started in 1930, and is the only team to have played in every tournament. It was runner-up twice.
Brazil has played 87 World Cup matches, winning 60 (including the last seven), tying 14 and losing only 13. It has outscored its opponents, 191-82.
But no matter how good Brazil may be, history shows it could have a hard time in Germany.
After winning its first two titles in 1958 and 1962, Brazil was heavily favored to clinch a third in 1966 in England. Even with Pele in his prime, the team played poorly and was eliminated early.

School children and soldiers, you're out of luck. No free tickets to the World Cup.
Organizers had considered giving away tickets in order to fill empty seats at stadiums during the tournament, but abandoned the idea as not practical.
"Despite all our efforts, we realize there will be no-shows," German organizing committee vice president Horst Schmidt said Saturday. "We tried to devise a system but were not very successful. We thought of soldiers, clubs, schools, but it's impossible to organize. They have to wait, and then there may not be any tickets.
"So we'll use volunteers who do not have any specific thing to do. Anything else is not feasible."
At the 2002 World Cup, organizers were criticized because tens of thousands of tickets weren't used. For this World Cup, which begins Friday in Munich, the criticism has been that too many tickets have been reserved for sponsors, affiliates of FIFA and organizers. Security measures put in place to limit counterfeiting and ticket scalping have also come under fire.
"I have been involved in many World Cups, and I must say this World Cup is extremely well-prepared," said Lennart Johansson, the chairman of the FIFA World Cup organizing committee.
More than 98% of the more than 3 million tickets that were initially available have been sold, putting this World Cup on pace to be the second-best attended behind the 1994 World Cup in the United States — which drew nearly 3.6 million fans.
About 64% of the World Cup tickets were reserved for sponsors, affiliates, competing teams and non-competing soccer federations. Since May 15, 11,000 of those tickets were put on sale to the general public and sold, Schmidt said.
"People have a moral obligation not to keep a ticket they know is not going to be used," FIFA general secretary Urs Linsi said.
German officials have also encountered some problems with a new system that allows fans to pick up tickets that have already been paid for at "ticket centers" near the stadiums. Fans can also use the centers to change the name on tickets. Each ticket has the holder's name printed on it in a bid to reduce fraud.
"One fan mistakenly was able to buy a ticket at the ticket center and this created a stampede," Schmidt said, referring to an incident in Gelsenkirchen on Tuesday.
Segregating fans of different teams has been an effective method to reduce clashes between rival supporters, but Schmidt realized this probably would not be possible with the return system.
"They're are fans from rival teams that have not always been amicable," Schmidt said. "But this can be completely different at a World Cup. Fans can get along with each other very well."
With the tournament less than a week away, officials appeared confident.
"Six days before the start of the tournament, we need to accelerate the process," Schmidt said. "I'm fairly optimistic it will run smoothly."

Others may have been responsible for creating the ultra-skilful brand of attacking play known as ‘Total Football’, but Cruyff will be remembered as the philosophy’s embodiment.

Vic Buckingham, who coached the young Cruyff at Ajax in the 1960s, summed up the Dutch master’s range of talents.

"He could do everything — set movements up, fly down the wing, run into the penalty area, head the ball in. Left foot, right foot, anything — and such speed. God’s gift to mankind, in the football sense. That was Johan."

Born in 1947, Cruyff became a star with Ajax at 19, helping the Amsterdam side win the league and finishing as top scorer in his first full season with the club. His skills were granted a wider audience in continental competition, and in 1966 he excelled as a member of the Ajax team which trounced Bill Shankly’s Liverpool 7-3 over two legs, a landmark result for Dutch football.

The same year also saw Cruyff awarded his first international cap, scoring on his debut against Hungary.

Two months later the tempestuous side of his nature flared up when he became the first Dutch player to be sent off in an international.

With Holland yet to fully develop as an international side — they missed qualification for the 1970 World Cup — Cruyff had to content himself with parading his genius in club football.

Between 1966 and 1973, before he joined Barcelona, he won six league titles with Ajax, four Dutch Cups and a hat-trick of European Cups in 1971-73.

He was also crowned European Footballer of The Year in 1971, 1973 and 1974.

The 1974 World Cup Finals in West Germany looked set to be a coming out party for Holland, with Cruyff as captain, and all looked to be going to plan as the Dutch cruised into the final against the hosts.

From the kick off against the West Germans, Holland were superb. Fifteen passes linked together, Cruyff darts into the box and is fouled, penalty. Converted by Cruyff, 1-0 Holland, with the Germans yet to touch the ball.

Cruyff was to be denied the World Cup crown however. Holland, intent on humiliating the hosts, allowed Germany back into the match and eventually lost 2-1.

While in Germany, Cruyff’s rebellious streak shone through.

He rowed with Holland’s football federation, refusing to wear adidas boots supplied under a contract agreed with the German manufacturer, and he even played in a shirt with only two stripes instead of adidas’ famous three.

Although he played in Holland’s qualifying campaign for the 1978 World Cup, Cruyff refused to play in Argentina, and his 48th and final game for the Dutch national side came in 1977 against Belgium.

A spell in America was followed by a return to Ajax in 1982, where he won another league title, before moving to Feyenoord where he won another championship in 1984.

Czech midfielder Vladimir Smicer has announced that he will not play for the Czech World Cup squad in Germany.
Smicer, 33, made the announcement to journalists in Prague after a meeting with national squad manager Karel Bruckner and doctors at which they concluded that his long running injury problems prevented him starting in the competition.
Smicer broke the news to fellow players at midday Thursday.
"It was not easy. It was emotional and tears were shed. But it would not have been fair of me if I was to go to the tournament and was not able to help the team," he said.
Czech football federation officials have invited him to spend some time with the team in Germany.
Smicer has been sidelined since February with a tendon injury sustained when playing for French side Bordeaux. His problems worsened last week when he was taken to an Austrian hospital after injuring his right leg during shooting practice with the national squad during World Cup preparations at an Austrian Alpine retreat.
In spite of the fresh injury Bruckner refused to rule out the ex-Liverpool player from his World Cup plans saying that he had until June 11 to take a final decision.
Smicer's possible replacement, Libor Sionka, newly signed for Glasgow Rangers from Austria Vienna, joined the Czech squad at their Austrian retreat last week.
Czech team spokesman, Lukas Tucek, said Sparta player Tomas Sivok had also joined the team, the agency CTK reported. A final decision on Smicer's replacement has not been taken

SMOLAREK DOUBT
Poland striker Ebi Smolarek may miss the World Cup warm-up game against Colombia on Tuesday due to food poisoning, team officials said on Monday.
Smolarek, usually a right-sided midfielder, was a surprise choice up front alongside Maciej Zurawski in the Poles' 10-0 demolition of local Swiss side St. Gallen on Sunday, scoring three times in a game played behind closed doors.
"Smolarek was in bad shape after the flight and coach Janas decided to let him rest from training this evening," team spokesman Michal Olszanski said.
"It looks like he ate something bad on Sunday and has a light stomach problem. We are hoping he may be better in the morning, but he may not start against Colombia."
The Poles begin their World Cup campaign against Ecuador on June 9. They also play hosts Germany and Costa Rica in Group A.
Their final friendly is against Croatia in Wolfsburg on June 3.
"We will try different options in the game with Colombia tomorrow. Then you will be able to see what style of game we will prefer," Janas told reporters. "I will announce the 11 that will start against Ecuador after the Croatia game."
